White Mosque

Bolgar Islamic Academy includes the White Mosque Complex, which was inaugurated on June 10, 2012. The complex consists of the mosque buildings, mufti residences and madrasah surrounding a prayer square.
The design of the White Mosque Complex is an illustration of the combination of the finest works of world Islamic architecture. A fountain sits in the center of an arcade with 88 columns that surrounds the mosque’s area. The building’s exterior is encased in white marble. The height of the two minarets is 46.5 meters; the diameter of the main dome is 10 meters, while the height of the dome inside the mosque is 17 meters. The walls are adorned with traditional decorative elements from Turkic and Arab cultures.
The Holy Quran is continuously recited and broadcasted online from the White Mosque, with breaks for prayer. The mosque houses a hair of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, gifted by Talgat Tadzhuddin, Supreme Mufti of the Central Spiritual Board of Muslims of Russia, and a model of the White Mosque made of silver and gold, gifted by Rustam Minnikhanov, President of the Republic of Tatarstan.
The White Mosque is of great significance for the Republic of Tatarstan as an original architectural structure. It is a complex of buildings surrounding a prayer square, with a fountain in the middle. The building’s exterior is encased in white marble. Oriental columns, towering minarets and a dome with exquisite stained-glass windows inspire photographers, artists and poets to create masterpieces. The model of the White Mosque is inspired by the finest works of world Islamic architecture.
The White Mosque complex is not only a religious, but also an intellectual center for Russian Muslims, largely due to the fact that since July 2017 the mosque has become part of the Bolgar Islamic Academy. In addition to services, the mosque hosts practical classes of the Academy’s students.
In the mosque there are regular daytime recitations of the Quran. Tatarstan Quran hafizas, alternating with each other, recite ayats of the Noble Quran and ask Allah Almighty for prosperity and well-being for Muslims all over the world.
The White Mosque houses the main treasure of the Muslims in Tatarstan – a hair of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, gifted by Talgat Tadzhuddin, Supreme Mufti of the Central Spiritual Board of Muslims of Russia at the solemn ceremony dedicated to the anniversary of the adoption of Islam by the Volga Bulgaria. At the time, Talgat hazrat addressed his fellow Muslims saying, “If the body of our Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, is buried in Medina, a hair from his beard will be kept here”.
The White Mosque is not only an architectural object, but also a functioning mosque, which hosts practical classes for students of the Academy, holds five prayers, Friday and holiday prayers and various religious rites: nikah, name giving, aqiqah, etc. Anyone, regardless of their religion, is welcome to visit the mosque.
